This is a great beach! The only real beach in this quiet town is usually serene with consistent winds. There is a long fishing pier on the north end, white rock fishing jetties in the center, and the inter-coastal canal jetties (also for fisherman) far to the south. The swimmers and kite boarders (when they come) tend to hang out on the north side of the white jetties where it is very shallow and sandy. The best place to windsurf is south of the white jetties and north of the big inter-coastal jetties where there is a small seawall and stone steps. At low tide this area is almost unsailable unless you want to walk about a quarter mile out. At high tide it is still shallow, but very sailable a short walk out. With southeast winds there is a protected area of flat water where light surf breaks over sand bars, and “outside” past the end of the big jetties (where the dolphins hang out) there is a definite wind line and great swells for bump and jump. When the wind blows from the north, there is no “outside”. Rather a strong continuous pulse of white water and surf – not for the feint of heart.
Take highway 185 straight into town until you see the beach ahead. Launch anywhere, but the preferred area is on the south corner of Park st where you turn back into town.
